Reminder About Ebooks on Demand

Ebooks on demand is back, and this year £100k is available for spending on the ebooks of your choice.

All you have to do is choose your ebook from the Library Catalogue or DISCOVER and request access to it for a one week rental (Don't worry you don't have to pay to rent it - the Library does!) When 2 people request access to an ebook it is automatically bought for the Library.

This is a great service for students because...

• You can choose the ebooks the Library buys
• These ebooks are available immediately
• You can always find a book for your topic
• You can read an ebook anywhere with an Internet connection
• Any number of students can read an ebook at once
• A lot of extra money is being spent on ensuring that you get the books you need

Log In Problems

There are currently problems with logging into ebooks and some databases. ICT have been informed of the problem and are currently working on a solution however it may take until the end of the week for services to be back to normal.

In the meantime if you are unable to log in to a resource (i.e. you get an authentication error message) close the error page and reclick on the ebook / resource and it may well let you in. You may need to do this several times before it works.

Ebooks On Demand Is Back...

Over 33,000 ebooks are now available for preview via the Library Catalogue and DISCOVER.

These are VLeBooks made available through Askews and Holts – our new general ebook platform.

Staff and students will be able to preview each VLebook they select for a limited time. Thereafter, they will be asked to request access by clicking on a button and filling in a form. This will enable them to "rent" the book for seven days.

Each student has a limit of three rentals. If another customer were then then to request access after previewing the book, it would automatically be purchased.

The End Of E-books On Demand

All the money set aside for the "Ebooks on Demand" project has now been spent. We'll be reviewing what was bought and rented by students since Christmas over the coming months.

What I can already tell you is that more than 1,000 new ebooks were purchased - which is great and very encouraging and consequently the project may well return later in the academic year.

Finding Ebooks

If you're a new student you might be unfamiliar with using ebooks. An ebook is exactly the same as the printed version - except it's available via the web. Many of the core texts on your reading lists are available as ebooks.

You can find ebooks via the Library Catalogue. Any book with the little red ebook symbol (shown above) is an ebook. If you want to find only ebooks use the Advanced Search tab in the Library Catalogue & select "ebooks" in the Limit to: field.

Pop-up Blocker Problems!

A number of you have been reporting that you've been unable to view some of our electronic resources online, e.g. ebooks, electronic journal articles. In each case the problem has been that you have the pop-up blocker turned on in your browser. As ebooks and ejournal articles open as pop-ups they will be blocked too.


The pop-up blocker is located under "tools" if you're using Internet Explorer or Firefox. Google Chrome can't cope with our electronic resources so don't use it!
