Queen's Speech Announces New Bills Relevant to Applied Social Studies

Several new Bills relevant to Applied Social Studies topics were announced in the Queen's speech on 18th November. These include:
  • Children, Schools & Families Bill
  • Crime & Security Bill
  • Digital Economy Bill
  • Child Poverty Bill (carried over from the 2008-2009 session)
  • Equality Bill (carried over from the 2008-2009 session)

Electronic Inter-Library Loans

Academics and researchers may now receive their inter-library loans electronically to their desktop. If you would like to make use of this service follow these instructions:
  1. Download Adobe Digital Editions from the British Library website.
  2. You will still need to fill in the same inter-library loan form & return it to the Library.
  3. Be sure to specifiy "Secure Electronic Delivery" on the form or it will arrive in hard copy.
  4. You will receive an e-mail with a hyperlink to the document. It can be accessed and printed only once.
  5. If you have any questions about using this service or problems downloading the software please contact Valerie Allison, Senior Library Assistant (x4202).

Please Note: Electronic Inter-Library loans are currently only available to staff and researchers not to students. It is likely that the service may be extended to M level groups at the next stage of development.

Social Care TV

SCIE have now launched "Social Care TV" a broadband channel featuring films and links to resources on the big issues in adults’ and children’s care services. The films cover everything from dementia care to child safeguarding and young care leavers and should be useful to anyone interested in learning about good practice in social care.

Designed as a learning and development tool, you can view, download or e-mail films, and check out the key resources related to the subject. The service has been launched with 25 films, with two new films being released every month.
